I'm really pleased that this image made it into my portfolio. It's a little darker than most of my stuff...ok, all of my stuff...and it has a raw emotional feel to it. Hope you get something out of it.
Some models you just know are going to help you get that shot whatever it takes...K is one of those models.
Some clicks of the shutter you just know captured exactly what you wanted...this was one of those clicks.
Some post-processing just makes an image come to life...well, you get the idea.
You gotta love when these things all come together.
This shot can be found (and purchased) in my istockphoto portfolio
And, yes, this means I finally got back behind the camera and did a full studio session...it was awesome.
It's no secret that I'm lovin' Adobe Lightroom for managing my workflow but where it really shines for me is in processing images with multiple effects. Enter the awesome Steller Presets giving me the creative control I've been looking for.
I usually import and make my selections in Lightroom then touch up an image in Photoshop. Returning to Lightroom I then make a virtual copy and apply a presets. When I get the general look and mood I'm going for I start tweaking the settings.
Lots of my recent pictures posted here have been produced with the Steller Presets that are now available. I really like the results I'm getting and I expect you will too.
As usual, picture is available in my istock portfolio.
In a word, "no". Although I am starting to get a little more time to catch up and I'm actually thinking about booking some sessions. Until I convince myself that I have to commit the time I think I'll just "think about thinking about planning something".
Keeping the faith that I'll get back behind the camera really, really soon.
Between heading back to work full-time, family and the Christmas season it's been a long time (for me anyway) since I've picked up my camera. It's a little frustrating because I feel like I was getting into my groove with the shots I was taking, starting to experiment a little and expand my vision. Hopefully it will be a short enough time that I won't forget everything I've learned.
Photography is something I love to do so I will be making sure to find the time for it...in the new year, of course.
You're kidding, right? Setup all the lights, remote triggers, stands, modifiers and toys and just end up shooting in natural light? Yeah, well, it wasn't on purpose. After moving around my strobe with a big softbox on it, I got the model posed and I squeezed into a tiny space to get the shot. Strobe didn't fire and I liked what I saw on the LCD. So I ended up switching to F/1.8 for a real shallow depth and to make the most of the natural window light. I was so happy with the shots that we moved around and got some more. Here a couple shots from the seconds setup.
Of course I did do a lot of shots with the studio lighting but these ones just got my attention because of the simplicity and mood.
Both are now in my portfolio on istockphoto, first one and second one
I guess it's fitting that the arrival of my black backdrop has been followed with the addition of AC/DC's Back In Black to my session playlist on my MP3 player. I think I'll be digging up some more of my classic rock because it seems to result in some cool shots.
I think I'm having way too much fun doing this.
After some prompting and brainstorming I'm looking forward to experimenting with light setups a little more. So watch here for new stuff.
I'm lovin' my new black muslin backdrop, ok so everyone's got one...but mine just arrive a couple weeks ago and I've made sure to shoot on it whenever I shoot on the white one. It works so well for some of the models and the post processing is a breeze. I am really happy with the results and being able to apply the lighting techniques I've observed and learned over the last little while. It's the little things that make my day.
Oh and I got my hands on a collection of killer Lightroom presets that I'm having a blast with. They are in beta testing now, but as soon as they are for sale I'll post here.
As usual, this shot and many more are available in my istockphoto.com portfolio.
If Dale Hogan has taught me anything it's to appreciate light. Natural light, strobe light, the light you use, the light you don't use...all of it. Now that I'm getting more comfortable with my studio lighting for stock I'm starting to experiment with it for, well for lack of a better word, art. I'm learning, and I hope that I can always learn, how to use light to convey an emotion and a mood. Some great feedback from other designers and photographers that I admire is helping me develop the skills to express what I can picture in my mind.
Here's a sample from a little bit of experimenting and luck on a recent shoot with a new model.
I think I will start adding a little of this light play to my sessions just to see what we can achieve.
